Fight Club - Chuck Palahniuk

"The first rule of fight club is don't talk about fight club. The second rule of fight club is don't talk about fight club."

The narrator starts out as a middle aged completely average guy. He has a decent job, unmarried, nice condo, and hates his life. The only thing that is different is that he has a horrible case of insomnia. The only thing that helps him is to go to different types of support groups, pretending that he has the affliction of every support group he attends. The story starts when he meets Marla, another woman that is also pretending and both know it because they go to several of the same support groups. Marla goes because Marla feels alive when she goes to meetings all about the dying. The narrator ends up meeting Tyler and the two of them become friends and move in together after the narrator's place blows up. The two start a fight club to feel alive, with Tyler as the face of fight club. Most of the book is about the fight club and the change that the narrator goes through because of Tyler, Marla, and fighter.

I loved the book. I didn't see the twist at the end coming. It starts at the end and goes back through the story until it ends at where it started. The book is violent and is kind of graphic. It describes the different injuries that occur during fight club. Easy to read and keeps your attention.

Cute......

Nowhere But Here - Katie McGarry

It is exactly what you should expect from a Katie McGarry novel. It is super cute and cliched and if you aren't looking for something sweet enough to get a cavity then this isn't the book for you. Emily was adopted by her stepdad years before. She barely sees her bio dad and doesn't like him that much.  She goes to see her dad when there is a mix up and it looks like her grandmother, that she has never met, died. There she meets Oz, whose father is in the motorcycle club with Emily's bio dad. Oz wants into the motorcycle club and is basically Emily's babysitter when there is a threat to Emily. Oz and Emily hate each other at first and then they become friends who have crushes on each other, and then they fall in love with each other. (I know right, I had no idea that this was going to be the outcome.) Very cliched but it is also super cute and a light read if you are looking for something quick and cute. This is one of the anthologies series that she does, where each book is focused on a different character, one that you meet in the previous books.

Anna Karenina - Leo Tolstoy, John Bayley, Larissa Volokhonsky, Richard Pevear
""Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way."
-Leo Tolstoy"

Why did I put myself through that?

The Catcher in the Rye - J.D. Salinger

I had to read this book for school two years ago and was not able to get through it because of how bad it was and I didn't have enough time to push myself to finish it. I decided to retry it now because I figured it could not be as bad as I remembered. It was not, it was even worse.  Holden is the most pretentious, annoying, ungrateful protagonist that I have ever had the displeasure of reading. He spent the entire novel complaining about phonies and pretentious a**holes, while he is the biggest one of all. For some reason, his reckless and stupid actions bugged me even more than his hypocrisy. Don't put yourself through the painful experience of reading it if you don't have to. I certainly won't ever again.

Dziewczyna z pociągu - Paula Hawkins

I was recommended to read this book because I really liked Gone Girl. I get why I was suggested for this book but I did not really like it. The story is told from three different point of views.

The first is Rachel's point of view, she is the main point of view. Rachel is a drunk and is disgusting. She is the girl on the train and basically she makes up stories to go with this one couple she passes. But the woman vanishes and then she gets caught up in the investigation because she was around the area the night she was disappeared because her ex and his new wife live there. The next is Megan from a year previously and is the woman that is missing in the story. She is married to a controlling man who is suspicious of her cheating on him.  This is pretty accurate because she has at least two affairs during the book. The last is Anna, she lives down the street from Megan and is Rachel's ex-husband's new wife. She was extremely naive and bitchy. She was sleeping with Rachel's husband while they were married and blamed Rachel for all of it. She looked down on her husbands ex-wife because Anna was sleeping with him while Rachel and him were married. I love it when there are different point of views but for this book I disliked it because none of the three characters were likable.

But the real reason I disliked the book was I could tell who it was from a fourth of the way into the book. I had to force myself to finish the book after that because there were several scenes that were just so telling that I knew who the villain of the story was.

SPOILER ALERT!

Extremely Disappointed

Creed - Trisha Leaver, Lindsay Currie

I came across this book in September and it caught my interest from the beginning. I loved the idea of this crazy town kidnapping the three characters. I was so excited about it and maybe that is why I was so disappointed in the book. I expected to see the people in this town be nuts. Instead most of the book focused on Dee, the MC,  interacting with the mayor of crazy town's son, Joseph, and mayor of crazy town himself. Have no doubt, this town is a religious, fanatical cult. But, I wanted to see more of this town.

The story starts out with Dee(MC) and  Luke( her boyfriend)going to a concert and then having a special weekend for their one year anniversary. Unfortunately, Luke's brother Mike tagged along as payment for him to get lie to Luke and his parents about what Luke was doing this weekend. They run out of gas because apparently none of them even thought about it, despite Luke being basically a genius. Okay so they hike into this town that has sirens going off and go to the gas station. It's all locked up and no one around. Anywhere. they find these houses and go into one of them and when they see no one is there, they decide to spend the night, despite the creepiness of this town. While in the house, they find a book on how to beat your kid to save him from the devils of imagination and fun. They leave in the early hours of the morning and runs into a kid(Joseph, crazy mayor's son) their age that basically tells them that his father wont let them leave and that he needs their help to get him and his sister out of the town. they refuse and are attacked. fast forwards hours later, Dee wakes up and she is being bled by Joseph and then passes out again. When she wakes up next she meets the crazy mayor, Elijah. he tells her she is now Rebekah and is his new bride, because he killed his wife recently. The rest of the story is her either talking with Joseph on how to escape and blaming him for this situation or her being with Elijah and him threatening Mike and Luke's lives if she isn't a good bride. So at one point she gets to spend time with Mike and Joseph helps them leave, only to find Luke is dead. After much crying and screaming, Mike, Dee, and Joseph are able to leave and go to a town, miles away. When Dee wakes up, Mike informs her that their is no proof of their story, Joseph disappeared, and that everyone thinks they  got in car accident and Luke died.

I thought the entire book was disappointing because it didn't really show the town and the ending was just bad. It was too clean and neat. I was just extremely disappointed.

SPOILER ALERT!

Cursed

Cursed - Jennifer L. Armentrout I usually like Jennifer Armentrout's work but this book irritated me. The premise was good and I liked the beginning but once the MC guy was introduced I started to dislike the book. Ember, her mother, and her sister are basically kidnapped and forced them to move into a new town and live there. Ember was the only person that seemed to realize that kidnapping is illegal. Her sister was a little brat. Ember took care of her since her mother died and her younger sister was a little brat before they were kidnapped and after. Hayden was the love interest and he was raised by the guy that kidnapped Ember. A bunch of kids lived with this guy to help learn their powers. None of them seemed to care that they helped in a kidnapping. Hayden is treating her like she is a house guest and cannot seem to understand why she is not being sweet and pleasant and thankful for getting her out of the bad situation she was in before. Was her life great? no but kidnapping her to make it better is not ok. You find out further in the book that Hayden has been stalking her for the past two years. I was really disappointed in this book.

Confusing but worth it

Heart of Darkness and Selected Short Fiction - Joseph Conrad, A. Michael Matin

I was confused during parts of this book simply because there as so much symbolizing in the book it felt like you were being beaten with it. The book is an attack on imperialism and does it really well. i think that if you understand symbolism the book is definitely worth reading becaise as awful as the topic of the book and the pictures it depicts, it was one of those books that stay with you after you read it. If you are looking for a book that has a HEA than this is not the book for you. But it sicks with you and makes some points that are hard to disagree with, even in our own current society.

One Past Midnight

One Past Midnight - Jessica Shirvington I tried to finish it. I went back several times but I just couldn't. The MC was so annoying and I just could not get into it.

Independent Study: The Testing, Book 2

Independent Study: The Testing, Book 2 - Joelle Charbonneau This book did not really do anything for me. I don't really care what happens to the characters or how it ends. At least, for the first book, I was curious to how Cia deals with the recordings of The Testing. I actually had to force myself to keep reading the book. The entire problem in the book was Cia was to smart for her own good. All of the adults wanted to kill Cia because of how smart she was....... I thought was the point of the testing. And this society has major problems. Apparently that a defining trait of the smartest people in the country is to be willing to kill someone for your own gain. It was not just one person that was willing to do it. It seems that the best and brightest of society have no problem with killing for no real reason. You meet the president in this book and I liked her, but I get the feeling she might not be around much longer. Tomas was not in this book a lot. I do not know if I will bother to read the next book. This series suffer from special snowflake syndrome. The MC is just that special. Nobody else can compare AT ALL. It gets irritating.

The Elite

The Elite - Kiera Cass I liked the first book a lot. It was a different concept and I loved Aspen and Maxon. My main problem with the first book was America was slightly whiny. She was not bad enough to drive me crazy because the rest of the book was good. That was not the case in this book. I read about 50% of the book before I was done. I tried to finish this book 4 times before I decided to dnf the book. The entire book is America changing her mind between Aspen and Maxon. I tried several times to finish the book but I never could finish it. I tried. I will not to be reading the next book.
SPOILER ALERT!

Alienated

Alienated - Melissa Landers I am not sure what I really expected out of this book. I only read it because I was bored. And I got what I should have expected. My main complaint.... I read the entire book and can't tell you what the plot was. I think it was supposed to be all about them falling in love, which did not take that long. What did take long was for them to stop thinking about the other and actually act on it. Another problem is the girl Cara, all of her friends are assholes. Her boyfriend and her breakup over Aelyx(The alien/ love interest) five minutes after the boyfriend meets him. Boyfriend says 5 words to Aelyx and turns to his girlfriend and says send him back. She is getting a full ride to whatever school she wants for hosting Aelyx...... ARE YOU KIDDING ME???? SEND HIM BACK??? She plans to go to Dartmouth. Why would she send him back because you do not like him? Her best friend Tori does not like him right away, but she tells her that she will stick by her. That lasts about a 15 pages and then she turns her back on her too. Then Tori and Cara's ex got together. They shun her in public and then in the end they are friends but in secret. Nobody can know because of what that would do to their reputations. The kids in this book are ridiculously violent. A teenage girl pulls a shotgun on people that used to be her friend and ends up shooting one of her current friends. She is not even slightly disturbed by this too. Okay. Enough on the stupidities of the characters.
The love interest Aelyx was not stupid at all. In fact he was basically a genius. What he is though is a condescending a**hole. He is basically telling all these kids how stupid they are and then thinks "They are all so violent and mean" Of course they are. I cannot stand you either. I was confused why the aliens needed humans. They needed them for emotions but if they did not train everyone to be an emotionless, condescending a**hole, they could fix that themselves.
Both main characters were irritating and the side characters were awful. Plus no plot and I can not even think of a single reason to read this book.

City of Heavenly Fire

City of Heavenly Fire - Cassandra Clare I loved this series. It was a really good conclusion to the series. There were a lot of things that I liked about this book. It kind of gave you a peek into her next series TDA. I really liked Emma and Julian was amazing. Some authors feel the need, because it is the last book, they have to kill off half of the good characters. She did not do that in the book. There was a war and some did die, but it was not too much. Most of the loose ends were all tied up. And it meshed TID, TMI, and TDA together. It was not spoilery for either of the other series, but if you read TID and have been following the updates for TDA it makes sense. My main complaint with the series was that Clare has a bit of a habit of Special Snowflake Syndrome. In the second installment, I didn't notice as much of it. It gets brought back at the end of this series. I get that the Clary is the main character of the series, but I felt that Jace should have been the one to kill Sebastian. It was her brother, but I felt that him and Jace were opposites. Both were raised by Valentine, had the same training, and Sebastian was always jealous of Jace. Clary all of a sudden remembered this rune she came up with several books back and it saves the day annoyed me but that was my only big complaint. The book was from different people's POV. I liked this and I didn't. It got confusing and slightly irritating at times. It was a good conclusion to a good series.
SPOILER ALERT!

If I Stay

If I Stay - Gayle Forman If you read, then you know the feeling I am talking about. The one that you put down a book and you just want to jump up and down screaming. This was one of those books for me. I am not extremely picky on the books I read. A lot of the books I read depend on my mood. So when I first saw this book and read the description, it did not really stick out for me. It seemed sad to me and I only like reading sad books at certain times. I went to the library today and was looking for something and saw the book. I decided to try it. It is not that long and I can get through books really fast. IT WAS AWESOME!!! OMG!!!
It was amazing. I loved it. Did not put it down at all. I sat down to read it and an hour and a half later finished it. Did not realize I was sitting more than fifteen minutes. The story is about a girl named Mia who survived a car crash that killed both of her parents. Both her and her brother are rushed of to the hospitals. She gets moved to another one because her injuries are so extensive. But she is there watching all this go on. She is not a ghost. She is basically the same as she is when she is alive except that nobody can see her. The story takes place in both the present and the past. She is thinking about different memories about her family, her best friend, and her boyfriend. She has to decide to stay or go. Later on in the book, she finds out her brother died, and decides she is going to go. Her boyfriend Adam, convinces her to stay. Adam was so cute. I loved him. He was so sweet and the part at the end, when he convinces her to stay was so sweet. It was a different book. I haven't come across anything like it. 100% worth reading.
PS started screaming ehrn I found out there was a sequel...

The Shadowhunter's Codex

The Shadowhunter's Codex - Cassandra Clare, Joshua Lewis I really liked this. It was interesting to read about, but the best part ofnit was the comments. Clary, Jace, and Simon all wrote comments in the book. These were the best part. I would randomlynburst out laughing. It is a fun companion to the series.
